Senile Pruritus is defined as a chronic itch in a person aged 65 years or older. Pruritus is defined as an unpleasant sensation of the skin that provokes the urge to scratch. Ageing skin is susceptible to pruritic disorders because of the cumulative effects that the environment has on the skin and because of changes to the skin structure that occur as we age.

Myth

Topical treatment in senile pruritus is not important.

Fact

Senile pruritus as a condition is difficult to diagnose and is multifactorial. Also, it is a chronic disease for which a topical is a much safer option. Not only this, the European Society for Dermatology and Psychiatry recommends both emollients and anti-pruritic topical in the treatment algorithm.

 

Myth

Calamine is beneficial for senile pruritis.

Fact

Calamine is not useful in this case as it dries the skin. Senile pruritus is a condition in which xerosis is the biggest concern.
